Australia│Croatia│Japan│Norway│Sweden The choir consists of thirty-four singers, many of whom are musicians by profession. The choir has always held an interest for contemporary music and has over the years accumulated a broad repertoire in this field. This has lead to first performances of music by Sven-David Sandstrom, Lars Edlund and others. Collaboration with international artists has been frequent, and the choir has produced recordings with Barbara Hendricks, Hakan Hagegard and Edita Gruberova. The most recent recording, “No Borders”, which features Barbara Hendricks, was released in 2005. The choir often tours with Mrs Hendricks; in December of 2005 the choir did a two-week tour of France with her, and in February this year a concert was held in the Cathedral of Verdun in commemoration of the WW1 battle of Verdun.In the spring of 2003 the choir participated in a French opera project led by the baroque specialist Emanuelle Haim and featuring Anne Sofie von Otter as soloist. During 2002 and 2003 the choir collaborated with the a cappella group The Real Group in a concert series spanning Sweden and Norway. The choir has toured regularly with a cappella programmes both within Sweden and abroad, including tours in the USA and Taiwan. Under its own name, the choir has released recordings of works by Lars Edlund, Hugo Alfven and Nils Lindberg. Apart from a cappella music, the choir's repertoire includes oratorios such as the Bach B-minor Mass and requiems by Brahms, Verdi, Mozart and Britten.
In 1967 Prof. Sjökvist was appointed Cathedral Cantor at the Stockholm Cathedral, and since 1981 he is Cathedral Organist (Domkapellmeister) and Coordinator of the Stockholm Cathedral's choral and concert activities. Gustaf Sjökvist has been the conductor of the Stockholm Cathedral Choir since 1967, with which he performs over twenty cathedral concerts annually and shares responsibility for the cathedral's liturgical content. Prof. Sjokvist and the choir have toured extensively throughout Italy, Poland, France, Austria, England, USA, Australia and South Africa . During many years he was even the leader of the vocal group Camerata Holmiae specialising in pre-Baroque and contemporary music. Prof. Sjökvist was the Principal Conductor and Artistic Director for the Swedish Radio Choir 1986-1994. Together with this ensemble he has produced a number of recordings and toured in countries including the former Soviet Union, Italy, Germany, France and throughout Scandinavia . Under his leadership the Radio Choir collaborated with several notable conductors such as Claudio Abbado, Ricardo Muti, Carlo Maria Giulini and Herbert Blomstedt. Prof. Sjökvist is the Principal Guest Conductor of the Radio Choir at the Bayerischer Rundfunk (Bavarian Radio) in Munich since 1994, having worked regularly with them since 1978. In 2003, during his 25th anniversary with the choir, a commemorative CD-collection was released, featuring several of the recordings and concerts from this time. Gustaf Sjokvist has had guest performances with a range of professional choirs throughout Europe, including the radio choirs of Copenhagen, Cologne, Stuttgart and Hamburg as well as the French Radio Choir in Paris . Gustaf Sjökvist's Chamber Choir was formed in 1994, with which he has created an extensive repertoire specialising in contemporary music. The choir has during its relative short existence gained recognition as a major contributor to the cultural program in Stockholm . Since the mid-1970’s Prof. Sjökvist has committed half of his engagements to guest orchestral conducting. In addition to the orchestras within Scandinavia with which he has been Guest Conductor he has conducted a number of German orchestras, the BBC in London and orchestras in USA and Australia . Prof. Sjökvist has made in excess of forty CD-recordings as well as participating in a range of radio and TV programs both in Sweden and overseas. He has during this time collaborated with a number of artists including Victor Borge, Birgit Nilsson, Stan Getz, Putte Wickman and Bob Brookmeyer. During the 1980’s Prof. Sjokvist was frequently Guest Conductor at the Royal Opera in Stockholm specialising in the contemporary operatic repertoire. Prof. Sjökvist
is a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Music since 1988. In 1991
he was appointed Professor by the Swedish Government, in 1998 he was awarded
the Royal Medal Litteris et Artibus, and in 2000 awarded the title Royal
Court Organist (hovorganist). |
